What Is A Periodontist?
A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal (gum) disease and in the placement and maintenance of dental implants. Periodontists are experts in the treatment of all forms of periodontal disease, including gingivitis, periodontitis, and gingival recession.
The American Dental Association recognizes periodontics as one of the nine specialties of dentistry. Periodontists receive extensive training, including three years of additional education beyond dental school.
By choosing a specialist you will benefit from the latest procedures for treating periodontal disease and placing dental implants tailored to your needs. In addition, Dr. Goodner and Dr. Roberts can perform cosmetic periodontal procedures to help you achieve the smile you desire.
A Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology is a periodontist who has made significant achievements beyond the mandatory educational requirements of the specialty.
To be educationally qualified for Board certification requires:
- Completion of a dental degree (DDS or DMD)
- The candidate must then successfully complete an additional 3 or more years in an educational program in periodontology which is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association. The period of study concentrates on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of periodontal disease, regeneration of supporting tissues of the teeth and their substitutes and maintenance of health, function and esthetics.
In addition to the basic educational requirements, Board certification requires:
- Comprehensive oral and written examinations covering all phases of periodontal disease and its treatment, including dental implants;
- Recertification of continued competency in periodontics through continuing education and participation in self-study programs.
